In today’s review we are going to take a look at the Rapala Heavy Duty Electric Fillet Knife. Electric fillet knives are quite good in situations where you need to fillet fish quickly and efficiently. Using a traditional fillet knife it would take a long time to clean large amount of fish. The heavy-duty electric knife we are going to take a look at today, is fitted with a 7.5inch dishwasher safe reciprocating blades. The manufacturer states the knife has twice the speed and three times the power of standard electric knife.

The length of the blades is appropriate for smaller to medium fish. The blade is flexible enough that you can peel the fillet right down on the skin of the fish. It will allow you to do even cuts right through rib bones and backbones.

The knife features an 8-feet long power cord. It also is fitted with a comfortable grip which will prevent slippage. The power button has to be held down for the knife to operate. I know for some people this is irritating and it would be good to be able to just hit the button and go. Oh well, maybe some other time.

To motor runs quite cool and it’s not noisy at all. This is achieved by Rapala’s custom airflow design. If you have ever used another electric knife, you have probably came across one which gets really hot in one’s hand. Therefore you know how unpleasant this is.

One of the downsides of the Rapala Heavy Duty Electric Fillet Knife is that there is no case included in the package. The knife will arrive packed in hard plastic which you will have to cut open. If you need a case or a sheath, you will have to look around for something which would serve as one for this particular knife.

Another thing which comes to my mind which may be a downside for someone is that it cannot be used with a 12V source. This knife is AC only.

This knife enjoys very positive reviews by the customers over at Amazon.com. At the time of writing, this knife had 69 customer reviews, most of them being positive.

Most of the customers praise this model for its sharp blades. One of the customers even stated the knife is one of the best electric fish fillet knives ever made and we have to agree with that. The customer even went on and said that the Mr. Twister knife by Piranha is not nearly as good as this one.

Of course there were also some complaints about the knife, but this is to be expected with every product on the market. One of the customers mentioned that the blade release buttons for inserting and releasing the blades get stuck from time to time. This forces him to wiggle and pull the blades outwards, which could cause unpleasant injury.

Final thoughts

If you are looking for an electric knife, this probably one of the best you can possibly get. It works very well, features razor sharp blades, and has a reasonable price tag. Obviously there are also other alternatives such as the American Angler electric knife but it costs slightly more. Given the knife’s excellent price-performance ratio I can only recommend it. There are some minor flaws but nothing is perfect.
